The Michigan Gourd Society

Theta Chapter of the American Gourd society was formed in August of 2007. The Chapter was formed to gather those in Michigan who enjoy growing and using Gourds. MGS members will strive to share the joy and passion of growing and using Gourds with others through communication, educational presentations and displays of their work at venues such as Patch meetings, local and national events whenever possible.

Dear Michigan Gourders:

I sure hope everyone has had a wonderful Fall season. This is the time of year of many festivals and shows. It is always nice to take in as much as our pocketbooks allow us as we drive through the state for the many events that take place in our communities. There are some wonderful farms in our state that were providing gourds in their farm markets. To name one of our new members, Sandy Muehfeld from Belding, MI. We had Carrie Cervantes go from the Dimondale area to Sandy’s farm in Belding and check out her farm gardens and gourds. I was with the MSU extension with a group talking and creating gourd birdhouses in Ionia, MI, this Fall.

We have the holidays upon us before we know it. Did you have a chance to create a gourd turkey with your gourds?

We have had many of our members take time out of their busy lives to speak at several community organizations in the state. To name one, who recently went to speak to a group in the south eastern side of the state, Tammy Braunscheidel, not only spoke with her a group….she even secured a donation to the Michigan Gourd Society. Now, who could have topped that !!!! Tammy you are so appreciated and your enthusiasm is contagious. It was so wonderful to meet you in Grand Rapids this past September.

The Sauble Point Gourders up in the Pentwater area are sponsoring a gourd-decorated tree for a Festival of Trees fundraiser for the Shelby, MI, library. There will be a silent auction held December 1st through 3rd to auction off their beautifully decorated tree. Someone will be one lucky family to own that creation. It was important to their group to give something back to the community in Oceana County.

Please enjoy the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays with your families.

NOTE:  If you have a gourd story, a tutorial or anything else you would like to share with us please write it up and send it, along with a short bio, and a photo of yourself … or perhaps we can will find a photo of you!  Remember - there are cameras everywhere!  We will be calling on different members from time to time to give us input with ideas for fundraisers, lists of shows and fairs where the MGS could attend and just to check and see how you are doing.  Check with others in your patches to get input too and encourage them to participate in any way they can.   If there is anything the board can help you with please do not hesitate to call on any of us … we are here to help you and the MGS and we do have speakers who will give talks to groups who are interested.
