Jim Story Award: Single Manipulated Gourds
ENTRY #5
This entry was grown on an arbor. I used two cords knotted in intervals to restrict the growth of the snake gourd into a sort of braided, segmented pattern (the easy part).
Using the support of the arbor (as the gourd grew), I pulled the extra cording at the blossom end toward the stem end (the not-so-easy part because it is a daily labor in the heat of the day to make the very stubborn and thick snake gourd bend and move).
I learned that snake gourds are not as pliable as long handled dippers and the thicker they become, the more difficult they are to force to move.
I also encountered a very difficult problem in green cleaning this one. The skin was very light colored, thin and did not scrape off easily. I finally gave up on several of the segments and then took it on again after it had dried as you can see from the picture
