Jim Story Award: Multiple Inseparable Manipulated Gourds

                                                   ENTRY M-3
These gourds were grown together in a single season. In fact, they bloomed on the same day which meant they stayed at the same point of development. Ovver the past I have learned that when an extra long handle dipper has a growth spurt it can grow 5 inches in a single day. If they are not the exact same age, the gourd growing faster will break the others. Also, I plant the vines extra close together and carefully move the vines on the arbor to get the gourds closer together.

I try to pick out long stems. This helps in making a tie.  No materials were used, just hand manipulation and lots of patience. The actual ties were made 2 - 3 days after pollination. First, I tied a knot on gourd, then tied the second gourd on to the first knot and the third one to the second knot. After the ties were accomplished the rest was just shepherding the little gourds to try and even out the knots for a pleasing presentation. Gravity does most of the work.
