Positions on the Ballot at the end of an odd year ...
Officers assume their positions on the 1st of January. AGS Officers and Board Members hold offices for 2 years and one-half of the offices are elected/re-elected every year. The biennial elections being held December 2019 are for the 2020 & 2021 years and the offices include 2 Vice Presidents, 2 Directors-At-Large, and Treasurer. The candidates presented below are being presented in alphabetical order by last name. The vote can be done online or by mailing in the ballot at the bottom of this page (or the copy in the Winter issue of The Gourd Magazine).
Choose 2 Vice-Presidents from these Candidates or Write-In VP Candidate 1. Robin Bryson, Quail Valley, California Robin began her love of art when she was 13, a passion she continued through college. She moved to southern California and joined the Temecula Valley Art League. In the late 1990’s she was introduced to gourds, but when she brought her knowledge of gourd art to the Temecula Valley Art League, she was informed that gourds were arts and crafts, not fine art. Robin continued her gourd art, showing and educating the Art League members that gourd art can also be fine art. The difference is that the gourd is another form of canvas - finally convincing the non-believers that gourds can indeed fine art - and created a category for them to be judged. She served as Secretary and Treasurer for 4 years in the Art League. Robin is a member of the American Gourd Society, three chapters: California, Arizona and Pennsylvania Gourd Societies, and what is now the Southern California Gourd Society. For the last 4 years she has been traveling around the country teaching gourd art with Vickie Echols, meeting new people and recruiting them to join the American Gourd Society. VP Candidate 2. Bonnie Gibson, Tuscon, AZ Bonnie has been involved with gourds since 1996. She is currently the 3rd Vice President of the AGS, has served several times as an AGS director, was part of the original committee to formulate judging standards for the AGS, coordinates the quarterly crafting contest for the AGS Gourd magazine and was the founder of the AGS Artistry Award. Additionally, she has served as President and Vice President of the Gamma chapter (Arizona). Bonnie is the author of the popular and useful gourd art reference, “Gourds with Southwestern Motifs," and conducts classes at festivals, retreats and gatherings around the U.S. She is an AGS Certified Judge, a Judge Instructor and founder/former owner of ArizonaGourds.com. Choose 1 Treasurer or Write-In Treasurer Candidate. Philip Moorhead, Marion, Indiana Philip Moorhead is a cyber security professional, currently Chief Security Officer for MSECSOL. He holds many national and international certifications in the computer and security fields, and is well-known at state and national levels. Phil holds a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification and is a member of Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). Phil has been past President and past Treasurer for the local Marion Garden Club. He is currently on the Board of Directors and Treasurer for the Indiana Gourd Society (IGS), as well as current Treasurer for the local chapter of Mensa. Phil has been the state gourd show chairperson and is Editor and Publisher for the IGS magazine, The Tendril. Phil also served on the legal team when IGS reorganized their non-profit status. Among his other duties with the Indiana Gourd Society, he is also a certified master gourd show judge and judge instructor. He has been active in recruiting Indiana judges and leads the AGS Judge Training course for his chapter. He grows and contorts gourds following the teachings of Jim Story. In his spare time, he has crafted gourds, is a woodworker and wood carver. Philip is currently AGS Director 1, and has stepped-up to fill the AGS Treasurer position in this time of need. In his work with AGS years ago, he was advertising manager for the AGS magazine and actively recruited new advertisers helping them prepare advertising copy. Philip also assisted the previous editor with The Gourd Magazine. Choose 2 Directors-at-Large or Write-in Director Candidate 1. Sue Taber, Belton, Missouri Sue Taber has been an active gourd artist, teacher and grower for over 20 years. One of the early shows she attended was in Ohio where she met Jim Story and Ginger Summit. Sue has a home studio that she works in for both creating art for sale at the many shows she attends and for teaching in-person and now online classes. Sue’s specialty is decorative painting and is known for her dry-brush technique. If you check the craft books in your stash you may find that you have one or more of her 7 books (Gourds for All Seasons, by Sue Hollon), magazine articles or many e-pattern packets. You can follow Sue online as Sue Hollon-Taber Designs. Sue lives in Belton Missouri with a dog and porch kitties. Her two adult children live nearby and her daughter Melissa travels with her to the many gourd and decorative painting shows where Sue is both a teacher and vendor. At home, she grows many of the gourds used in her art, but teaches so many classes she buys gourds at nearly every show she goes to. In September alone she cut, cleaned and prepared over 250 gourds for the classes she taught that month. Sue is also a member of numerous gourd societies and looks forward to contributing to the American Gourd Society as a Director. Director Candidate 2. Celia Shaneyfelt, Old Fort, Tennessee Celia has been growing gourds since 2014. She joined the American Gourd Society in the fall of 2015 after visiting Betty Finch and realizing that there was more to gourds than just bird houses. Celia plunged into every aspect of gourds: growing, manipulation, teaching, photography and a variety of crafting techniques. She enjoys experimenting with new gourd ideas and takes classes to learn new techniques. She also has fun creating recipes using young gourds as ingredients. Celia was chosen to fill a vacancy on the AGS Board of Directors in 2017 and was elected in 2018. She writes the quarterly Gardening column in The Gourd Magazine and currently serves on two AGS committees: the Chapter Relations Committee and the Jim Story Award Committee. She still hopes to see the Tennessee Volunteer Chapter revived. She is a Master Gardener and teaches violin & fiddle. |
