AGS Judges & Clerks

Judges & Clerks
Qualifications

Judges should be chosen with experience in both gourds and art.
Judges must be impartial and consistent.

AGS Certified Judges

AGS certified judges must be a current member in good standing of the AGS
If one or more AGS certified judges are available, one of them shall be appointed as the head judge
Although not necessary under these guidelines, an AGS certified judge lends credibility to the competition and the appearance that the guidelines will be followed. If no AGS certified judge is available, the show chair shall appoint a head judge.

Clerks

Clerks may be anyone, including those with an interest in becoming a judge, whether or not otherwise trained or certified.
Clerks do not assist in judging.
Clerks serve the purpose of keeping official records of the judges’ decisions, so should be chosen for their ability to keep accurate and clear records of the judging.

The AGS Judge Training & Certification Program The American Gourd Society recognizes three types of judges for our competitions: Apprentice Judge, Certified Judge, and Certified Judge/Instructor.

APPRENTICE JUDGE
Requirement to become an AGS Apprentice Judge

Must be a current AGS Member/maintains AGS membership during the Apprentice period.
Completes and submits the AGS Certified Judge Application(link below)
Attends 1 AGS Judge Training Program led by an AGS Certified Judge/Instructor. After completion of the training program the participant becomes an apprentice.
After completion of the training course and judging one show the candidate becomes a Certified Judge.

CERTIFIED JUDGE
Requirements to become an AGS Certified Judge

Maintain AGS Membership
Completed all 4 Apprentice Requirements (see above)
If a Certified Judge's AGS Membership lapsed or was unable to maintain their certification for a period of time, they can be recertified by attending a AGS Judge Training Program prior to a Gourd Show

Maintaining Credentials as Certified Judge

Maintains AGS Membership in the 4-year renewal period (minor lapses may be overlooked)
Judge and/or clerk a minimum of 1 AGS (or other Gourd) Competitions in the 3 year renewal period.
Leads or participates as a leader in at least 1 educational activity in the 3 year renewal period, see 1-4 below...

Leads or participates in a “Practice Judging” session.
Teach a “What Judges Look For” class.
Leads session to cover some of the 2013 AGS Judging Guidelines by Category
