Jim Story Award: SINGLE Manipulated Gourds
ENTRY #2
Growing & Manipulation Techniques. I used hay baling rope and tied it around the ball then tied two strings to that rope. The next day I wrapped first one string then the other up the length of the gourd, crossing front and back all the way to the stem. As the gourd grew, it spread on either side of the rope. The careful alignment of the string crossings kept the zipper from twisting as it grew. When it stopped growing I removed the rope from around the ball and pulled a long bag over the ball to support its weight. I tied the bag to opposite sides in the arbor to keep it straight.
Challenges. In making a zipper you need to wrap one string then the other so that as the gourd grows the strings can pull straight. Also, the places the strings cross front and back must be in a straight line.
